Jumping On — Series Premieres, One-Shots, And New Story Arcs Kicking Off On January 31, 2024
by Brendan M. Allen

One of the most frustrating things about finding new comics to read and enjoy is finding a good jumping on point. It can be confusing and disheartening to pick up a single issue from the middle of an arc without having the context of the previous chapters.
With that in mind, here are a few New Story Arcs, Series Premieres, and One-Shots that caught my eye for this upcoming New Comic Book Day, Wednesday, January 31, 2024.
Featured Series Premieres, One-Shots, and New Story Arcs:

The Séance Room: Harry’s Opus #1, Source Point Press
There are a couple things about this one that drew my eye. The name Weiss, and the mention of a Séance Room. If you have a sharp eye, you may have noticed Houdini photos, playbills, and memorabilia all over the walls and shelves in the background of Happy Hour episodes. Houdini’s real name was Erich Weiss, and he became OBSESSED with exposing fraudulent mediums after some huckster tried to convince him that his late mother Cecilia was communicating through him.
This book may have nothing at all to do with any of that, but first impressions stick, and it’s drawn by Ben Templesmith, so…

Undead Evil #1, Asylum Press
Zombies, voodoo, and paranormal activity. Set in the aftermath of Katrina, a centuries old family curse is awakened by an undead voodoo priest. Untold family secrets are revealed as paranormal researcher Alfred Carter tries to cleanse his bloodline. Instead, he begins a rapid descent into madness. Asylum describes this one as H.P. Lovecraft meets Angel Heart.

Moon Man #1, Image
An astronaut named Ramon wants a quiet life. Something went wrong on a failed moon mission that the cameras didn’t capture. Whatever happened, all he really wants is to settle down back home. But those missing minutes hold an Earth-shattering secret.
That all sounds a lot like Contact, and I thought that movie was better than it gets credit for. I said what I said. Don’t @ me.
