The myths of the Hydra can be traced back to as early as 700 BC, when depictions of the multiheaded serpent-like monster being slain by Heracles and Iolaus are showcased in bronze. For hundreds of years, the myth of this strange beast with regenerative properties and breath of poison or flame has filled our legends and lore making its way into our cartoons, films, games, and movies.
Even in the earliest incarnations of Dungeons & Dragons, the hydra was present. It has been appearing in each edition of the game since its inception to plague players with heads that seem to multiply as quickly as they are lopped off.
WizKids has a truly worrisome Hydra miniature that is anything but small. Boxed in one of the coolest tone-evoking packages they have put out to date, the huge Hydra mini will make your players worry the moment it hits the table.
All five heads of this unaligned monstrosity are sculpted in brilliant detail with forked tongues, gnashing teeth, and a paint scheme that sets this creepy little collectible off in the best possible way.
The texture on the skin of the Hydra feels very organic, making the whole thing even more unnerving. The attention to detail that went into the design of the water ripple design on the base really elevates the whole thing to a level that makes it worthy of shelf display as well as a game piece.
The haunting art on the box is also a favorite and I could not part with it. I really love the way it captures the looming dread that the hydra brings as its multiple heads break through the water’s surface to harrow your party as they wander along the riverside or take a trip across a seemingly still lake.

I don’t have one myself but I’ve seen it a few times out in the wild and it is truly a wonder to behold. Coupled with this Hydra, it would make a perfect staging ground for some epic nautical combat.
