Blowout Cards And Dynamite Team Up For ‘ThunderCats’ #1 Jae Lee Covers

by Erik Amaya

The debut of Dynamite’s ThunderCats #1 is nearly upon us and the company has one more surprise in store.

Dynamite has teamed up with Blowout Cards for another set of variant covers provided by Jae Lee. In homage to Jim Lee‘s cover for X-Men #1, the sequence of four covers create a single scene. A fifth cover will feature the entire image, as seen below:

We have to admit, Mumm-Ra looks great in Magento’s spot while the ‘Cats themselves are certain dynamic as they stand in for the X-Men.

In addition to the X-Men homage, the set of covers will be available in a polybagged group. The bag itself mimics the look of the sealed container for direct market editions of Superman (Vol. 2) #75, the Death of Superman issue. The bagged set will be limited to just 1,111 copies as this is a special edition of the premiere ThunderCats issue.

The series, one of the first in the company’s partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery, is a fresh take on the classic animated series from writer Declan Shalvey and artist Drew Moss. Fleeing the destruction of their homeworld, Thundera, the ‘Cats find refuge (and danger) on Third Earth. There, young Lion-O — now aged into the body of a grown man thanks to a malfunctioning cryo-sleep chamber — must quickly learn to be the team’s leader as he is the only one who can wield the Sword of Omens and harness the power of the Eye of Thundera within its hilt. No easy task for someone with 20+ years of maturity, let alone someone who went into deep sleep as a pre-teen. Shalvey told our own Anton Kromoff, “the tone could be described as a slightly darker, more grounded take on the characters.” Although not grimdark, it will confront the trauma from escaping Thundera and the difficulties in establishing a new home with, of course, “a lot of kicking and punching to come along with it.”

Ahead of its release, issue #1 made headlines by hitting a pre-order number above 170,00 copies. It suggest there has been a great hunger to see these character in action again.

ThunderCats #1 arrives in stores tomorrow, February 7th, and those interested in purchasing the Jae Lee covers can head on over to Blowout Cards’ site now to order.
