‘Red’ And ‘Red 2’ To Come Out Of Retirement For New 4K Steelbook Release

The short-lived Red franchise will live again in 4K.
Released in 2010, Red follows Bruce Willis as a former CIA agent who comes out of retirement to reassemble his old crew (including Helen Mirren and Morgan Freeman) to face an old enemy. The starry cast also includes John Malkovich, Richard Dreyfuss, Ernest Borgnine, Mary-Louise Parker, and Brian Cox. Based on the DC Comics miniseries featuring art by Cully Hamner, Red was sort of a decaffeinated alternative to that same year’s The Expendables. And it was a big enough hit to warrant a sequel, Red 2, which added Anthony Hopkins and Catherine Zeta-Jones to the mix.
This April, the two films will be packaged together in a 4K and Blu-ray Steelbook from Lionsgate.
Extras for the first film include deleted scenes, an audio commentary with retired CIA Field Officer Robert Baer, and a trailer, while Red 2 contains a multi-part documentary, deleted scenes, and the trailer.
The Red 2-film Steelbook collection will be available at Walmart on April 2 for the suggested retail price of $39.99.
Final thought: It’s hard to imagine that Mirren, now busier than ever, was already considered “retirement age” nearly fifteen years ago.
