WizKids Has ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ Wonders To Behold

Welcome to the table,

There was a time when my best pal Bob and I were almost untouchable at the gaming table. We played fast and loose, and between the two of us — me playing an evil cat wizard and Bob playing a noble Dragonborn paladin — we cut a path of destruction from one side of a snake-man-infested island to the other. Cullen Bunn, New York Times best-selling author, one of the co-hosts of Happy Hour, and easily the hardest-working man in comics, was running the game and it was almost a weekly occurrence he would toss some heavy-hitting monsters at us and we, along with Shawn and “The Nurg,” would roll through the encounter gleefully min-maxed with action economy that would make even the most dastardly of game designers scratch their heads at how they would stop us.

There was one night, however, when we had made our way down to the bottom of a ruined tower and turned a corner into a large chamber full of strange liquid that rippled like static on an old tube TV. Rising from this strange crackling liquid was an orb-shaped creature, a great central eye sat in the middle of its body over a mouth filled with jagged teeth and two tongues. Sprouting from its body were stalk-like growths that were capped with eyes. Each scanned the room and pulsed with strange, mystical energies.

The laughter stopped. Bob and I looked at each other across the table and you could feel the tension in the air as Cullen — the man I consider my brother — the master of horror, began to cackle.

“We are screwed” was all I got out before dice started hitting the table.

The fight took eight hours! Spread out over two weeks’ worth of game time, and to this day this encounter is what I point to as the reason I think Beholders may be the most iconic monster in all of Dungeons & Dragons.
