WizKids’ Deep Dragon Miniature Is Delightful Dreadful!

Welcome to the table,

I have always found the Underdark fascinating. The inhabitants are strange and alien yet still able to lurk about right under the feet of unaware adventures or those who venture farther than the dwarven deep roads into the land of deeper darkness. The landscape is full of spider-haunted kingdoms, fungus forests, lumber hook horrors, and arguably one of the oddest and most fascinating specimens of dragon, The Deep Dragon.

The Deep Dragon has always been a lot of fun to toss into an adventure, but the most recent 5th edition version has added a level of uncomfortable body horror to the subterranean predator. Its milky white eyes and muzzle that resemble an avian-like beak instantly conjure up images of the mythical cockatrice. The neck of the Deep Dragon now has ridges of embedded fungus adding to that cross-over between parasitic plant growth and horrific deep-dwelling winged nightmare.

WizKids did a fantastic job capturing this nightmare fuel in pre-painted plastic miniature form in their upcoming D&D Icons of the Realms: Adult Deep Dragon mini. It’s sized just right, as you can see above sitting next to medium and large-sized minis. This milky-eyed horror has a ton of character and would add a level of dread to your table whenever you deploy it against your party of players.

WizKids keeps the hits coming, and while I don’t own many of their dragons, this one is one of my favorites. It’s a welcome addition to both my gaming table and my collector’s shelf.

Until next time, the fact that these dragons hoard trivia, secrets, and bits of weird lore make them a ton of fun to add to a campaign as a chaotic neutral agent that plays all sides of the forces at work in the game.
