WizKids’ Whilrwyrm Wows!

Welcome to the table,
Planescape has fascinated me since childhood. Reading about the various gates, factions, and planes that dotted the Dungeons & Dragons landscapes, however, was very confusing as a kid. It was like trying to figure out what’s going on in Kingdom Hearts without ever picking up a controller and only learning about all the people with an “X” in their name through brief glimpses at the TV while my wife does her best not to toss the controller down the hallway in frustration. My weekends are fun.
It would not be until I was well into my late teens that I got a better grip on the setting created by the legendary Zeb Cook, and by the time D&D 3rd Edition rolled around, I had a much better idea of what was going on in the cosmology of the Great Wheel.
Now, all these years later and well into the life of 5e, the realm-hopping adventures in Planescape have returned once more and the fine folks over at WizKids have released some truly epic miniatures to go along with the newest addition.
One of the strangest and most terrifying creatures who inhabit the new Planescape edition for 5e is the Whilrwyrm. These creatures lurk in the waters outside the gate-town of Glorium. In the bay beyond it, there are these great churning whirlpools that regularly swallow and cast up ships … living, dead, or otherwise. In these strange waters lurk the Whirlwyrms and WizKids has done a spectacular job of rendering these fearsome foes in fighting miniature form.
This sculpt is fantastic, showcasing these massive creatures with rows of needle-like teeth, sail-like fins, and a delightful semitransparent aquatic-styled base that looks amazing when it catches the light. The paint job on this aquatic terror is also something to write home about as it does this really cool thing where it shifts from orange to red without being cartoonish or splotchy. The team over at WizKids did a great job capturing the whirling action in a frozen moment for your TTRPG table.
