The Art Of Politics — February: Short On Days, Not Short On Political Insanity

by Richard Bruton

Another month, another round of craziness, greed, and plain old stupid from the world of politics. And another month of the very best political cartoonists in the world skewering the politicians perfectly… it’s The Art Of Politics

Israel-Palestine – the killing continues…

Again, as it’s been every month since the Israel-Palestine conflict began, there are no easy solutions, just a continuing revulsion at the number of lives lost…

Ella Baron – on the more than 1m civillians, innocents, sheltering in Rafah as the Israeli attacks continue, closing in on the city.

Ben Jennings – on videos made by Israeli soldiers of Gaza detainees

Ben Jennings – on Biden and Sunak being asleep on the job as the despair in Gaza rises…

Martin Rowson – on the weird statements from Biden claiming the end was in sight…

Christopher Weyant

Before we keep going with the misery and idiocy – some good news… Northern Ireland reopens at last…

After being closed for two years, the Northern Ireland Assembly reopened at last, with First Minister, Michelle O’Neill, and deputy First Minister, Emma Little-Pengelly, taking their seats and resuming power sharing. Although in no way perfect, Northern Ireland’s continued success and the continued peace in a country that’s been ripped apart by war gives us all hope that things can work out where people decide that enough really is enough, no matter what the situation.

Election year in the UK and politics seems to be more chaotic than normal…

So many different things going wrong in UK politics, a government in crisis, a leader under threat, right-wing media sharpening the knives, right-wing politicians going even further into right-wing craziness and hatred, a technical recession in a country where so many are in dire need and terrible financial straits, an opposition that’s racing the Conservative ruling party to the bottom… oh, the joys of UK politics.

Ben Jennings – on the ‘technical’ recession…

Morten Morland – technicalities…

Chris Riddell – on the risks waiting round the corner for the UK…

Ben Jennings – a heartbreaking image – whilst the price of food falls a little, inflation, gas prices, and electric prices all mean that the common folk of Britain are still in dire need…

Martin Rowson – way too complicated to explain here, but the House of Commons and the House Speaker somehow managed to bring the place into even more disrepute than usual with a chaotic and ridiculous mess over a vote calling for a ceasefire in Gaza…

Ella Baron – on conspiracy theories reaching mainstream politics – with prominent politicians claiming all sorts of dangerous shite…

Dave Brown

Martin Rowson – reporting on Labour (the UK opposition party) is scaling back its £28bn green transition programme, blaming the economic uncertainty caused by the Conservative government. Yep, it’s the blame game and the continuing inability for the opposition party to do anything opposing…

Chris Riddell – on the same

Martin Rowson again – of course, never one to avoid hitting down, Rishi Sunak was soon jumping up and down on the Labour ditching of its green plan… no matter that Rishi did his own ditching of the green plan already.

Martin Rowson – once more – more shambolic opposition tied into opposition leader Keir Starmer’s not wanting to be seen to make the wrong move, leading to making no move, leading to a byelection in Rochdale turning into a complete mess after the Labour leader’s inaction…

Martin Rowson – again, on the Labour omnishambles in Rochdale…

Ella Baron – on the Rochdale byelection – a contest marked out by political feuding and political manoeuvering over Gaza

King Charles’ cancer diagnosis…

Charles came out with the news that he’d got a cancer diagnosis. The UK media went into overdrive, with every aspect of a very small amount of news gone through, again and again, over and over.

Martin Rowson – perfectly capturing the media frenzy, completely ignoring the terrible events from the rest of the world…

Morten Morland

Ben Jennings – while the King gets the finest and the most immediate treatment, the NHS waiting lists get longer and longer for the common folk…

THE GOOD OL’ US OF A…

Election fever ramps up and up…

Each week brings more caucuses and more primaries, leading us to the inevitable Biden vs Trump face off in November… and while it’s happening Congress and the House keep playing an ever more damaging game of politics…

MEANWHILE – REMEMBER RUSSIA? REMEMBER UKRAINE?

It may have dropped out of the news and its not so popular with the political cartoonists because of that, but the war in Ukraine continues and the threat of Putin looms large over the world.

Ben Jennings – on Alexei Navalny – another political opponent dies, another lot of meaningless outcrying from the world’s media and politicians…
