Jumping On — Series Premieres, One-Shots, And New Story Arcs Kicking Off On March 6, 2024

One of the most frustrating things about finding new comics to read and enjoy is finding a good jumping on point. It can be confusing and disheartening to pick up a single issue from the middle of an arc without having the context of the previous chapters.

With that in mind, here are a few New Story Arcs, Series Premieres, and One-Shots that caught my eye for this upcoming New Comic Book Day, Wednesday, March 6, 2024.

Aliens: What If…? #1, Marvel

Marvel has been hit or miss with their entries into the Aliens canon, but hopefully between an entire cadre of writers, this 40 page one-shot will fall on the right side of the line. Writers Hans Rodionoff, Adam F. Goldberg, Paul Reiser (who played Carter Burke in the original film), Leon Reiser, and Brian Volk-Weiss team with artist Guiu Vilanova to bring back Carter Burke, a Weyland-Yutani company man who is arguably more hated than the Xenomorphs themselves.

The Last Mermaid #1, Image

Derek Kirk Kim writes and illustrates the story of a lone mermaid who roams an endless wasteland on a quest beyond reason. To press on, she must survive the interminable stretches between tiny pockets of water, the roaming bands of cybernetic cannibals, and the fearsome mutant beasts. What propels her forward to take such a risk?

Golgotha Motor Mountain #1, IDW

I had a chance to interview writers Matthew Erman and Lonnie Nadler about this delightfully weird story of backwoods brothers Elwood and Vernon Damnage, their meth lab, and the giant interstellar rock that destroyed their latest cook. 

After the lab and their product is decimated by a meteor, the brothers still need to make their deliveries to the buyers. The pair sets off down Golgotha Knob only to be beset on all sides by crazed addicts, cannibal police, and mutated Neo-Nazis. It doesn’t matter what waits at the bottom of Golgotha Knob for the Damnage brothers because they must ride through a cosmic hell that they’re unlikely to survive… But if these brothers do survive, they’ll finally have made enough money to start over in the beautiful utopia that is Cincinnati.
