Dynamite To Roll Out With ‘Transformers’ 40th Anniversary Trading Card Set

by Erik Amaya

For kids who grew up in the 1980, 1984 was a big year. While previous generations lived in fear of a western totalitarian state thanks to a famous novel, those who were young at the moment had a bevy of new film, television, and toy lines to enjoy. One toy brand that made a huge splash was Transformers. In fact, the line of transforming robot toys — supported by a Marvel Comics title and a syndicated animated series — made such an impression that it continued almost uninterrupted for the last 40 years.

And yeah, some of us have to grapple with the fact 1984 was four decades ago.

But others, like Dynamite Entertainment, can find ways to celebrate. For instance, the company announced Thursday that they will be releasing a collectible card series to commemorate the fortieth anniversary of Transformers.

Naturally enough, the cards will focus on what is now referred to “Generation 1 ” — the characters based on the Takara toys Hasbro imported from Japan and ultimately tasked Marvel Comics editor and writer Bob Budiansky with devising, including Optimus Prime (although that name was contributed by fellow editor Archie Goodwin), Bumblebee, Megatron, Starscream, Ironhide, Soundwave, and more. The complete set features 110 base cards, 55 rainbow holofoil cards, 10 animation art cel cards, 5 ultra-rare enhanced cards. They will be available in individual foil packs (10 cards in each) or as a box set with 24 packs included. The boxes will be complemented with special metal box topper cards.

The art on the cards will span the gamut of the comics, original Transformer toy box art, and more. Also, Budiansky will be signing select cards.

Certain retailers will also have a specialty package with “three packs and a bonus foil card” or boxes presenting the complete base set. Other retailers, including Walmart and Sam’s Club, will have exclusive packaging and presentation of the set. Take a look at some previews of the cards below:
