‘The Penguin’ Admits An Ambition In A New Teaser Trailer

Max released a teaser trailer (above) for the upcoming series The Penguin on Friday. In it, Oswald Cobblepot (Colin Farrell) tells a tale of a gangster who ruled his neighborhood when he was growing up. Although a brutal man who died of a heart attack while “still holding a cigar,” the neighborhood threw a parade in his honor. Getting to the end of the tale, Ozzie wonders what being remembered like that would be like. It’s a simple scene juxtaposed with a number of glimpses of the series, but it underscores something The Penguin desires: to be honored.
It’s an interesting place from with to launch the next chapter of what the trailer calls “The Batman Saga,” but in keeping with the first film’s take on Penguin. Which, of course, makes one wonder how this will be done without The Batman (Robert Pattinson) poking his cowl into Cobblepot’s criminal aims. The eight-episode series will chart Ozzie’s climb up the underworld ladder in the wake of Carmine Falcone’s (John Tuturro) death (as seen in The Batman). He faces rivals on all sides, including Falcone’s daughter, Sofia (Cristin Milioti). Rhenzy Feliz, Michael Kelly, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Deirdre O’Connell, Clancy Brown, and Michael Zegen also star.
One last thing: while we joked about Farrell’s make-up turning him into character actor Richard Kind in the lead-up to The Batman‘s release, his performance in this teaser evokes more of a Robert DeNiro vibe. It’s a perfect note for this take on the character. We can’t wait to see if the show itself builds on that.
The Penguin comes to Max this Fall.
