Review – ‘G.I.Joe: A Real American Hero’ #305 And The Joes Fight Back

G.I.Joe: A Real American Hero #305 is another frantic issue as we skip back and forth between the action taking place on several fronts. But, it’s also an issue that gives Dawn Morena/Snake Eyes some space to breathe and rise as one of the stand-out characters of this busy book. Plus, the G.I.Joes fight back stealthily and successfully. 

As ever, Chris Mooneyham’s moody, gritty art style is the perfect fit for this series as he helps build a world that is suitably high-tech enough to do battle against the threat of the blue-ninja cyborgs but suitably worn-in to carry the scars of battle. Much like the worn-out look George Lucas brought to sci-fi with Star Wars, Mooneyham likewise takes great efforts to illustrate a world of grease, grit, blood and sweat. It’s a world in which modern warfare may be reliant of gadgets and dohickeys, but the grunts in the ground still get their hands dirty.

And while the script, by Larry “the Legend” Hama, is once more a fantastically fast-paced, heavily dialogued book, but appropriately balanced book there is always a moment of comedy to release the reader of the building tension. In this case, it’s when Python Officer is trying to explain the level of pain about to be administered to the mutated casino punters. “Root canal” level pain, “all over your whole body,” when the victim was hoping for “kidney stone” level pain.
