Kelly Thompson To Take The Reins Of Dynamite’s ‘The Powerpuff Girls’

Mojo Jojo beware!

Dynamite announced Monday the imminent arrival of The Powerpuff Girls — the latest title in its partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery.

Spearheaded by writer Kelly Thompson and artist Paulina Ganucheau, the series will tell new tales of the Cartoon Network series. As in the original animated program’s premise, the book will follow Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup. The three young girls were given extraordinary powers when their father/inventor, Professor Utonium, added Chemical X to the building blocks of their structure. Since that time, the girls are sworn fight evil where ever it may appear, although it often appears near their doorstep in the city of Townsville.

Also like the cartoon, the new series will be pitched at younger readers and readers who remain young at heart, with supporting characters like the Mayor of Townsville, Miss Keane — and , of course, rogues like Mojo Jojo, HIM, Fuzzy Lumpkins, Sedusa, the Rowdyruff Boys — all scheduled to appear.

“I have to say, I am a very big fan of The Powerpuff Girls,” Thompson said in a statement. “So much so that when I was young — just out of art school — I even wrote a few short stories and began to storyboard them in hopes I could get a job on the show! So this just feels… exactly right. I was over the moon to get the offer.”

Ganucheau added, “I grew up obsessed with them. Had my own PPG OC and everything. I was on a Powerpuff Girls oekaki board way back in the day where all we did was draw in that style. I remember calling into Cartoon Network for PPG merch giveaways even. So yeah, safe to say: very exciting!”

Supporting the issue are covers from Ganucheau, Leonardo Romero, Karen S. Darboe, and Nicoletta Baldari.

The Powerpuff Girls #1 arrives in stores this July.
