Jumping On — Series Premieres, One-Shots, And New Story Arcs Kicking Off On April 24, 2024
by Brendan M. Allen

One of the most frustrating things about finding new comics to read and enjoy is finding a good jumping on point. It can be confusing and disheartening to pick up a single issue from the middle of an arc without having the context of the previous chapters.
With that in mind, here are a few New Story Arcs, Series Premieres, and One-Shots that caught my eye for this upcoming New Comic Book Day, Wednesday, April 24, 2024.
Featured Series Premieres, One-Shots, and New Story Arcs:

Universal Monsters: Creature From The Black Lagoon Lives! #1, Image/Skybound
This is a no-brainer of a pick for me. It’s a new adventure for Gill-Man as a journo named Kate Marsden hunts for a serial killer in the heart of the Amazon. Hot on the trail of a madman, she encounters an unexpected new threat that could turn out to be friend or foe… or simply The Creature From The Black Lagoon. I’m definitely pulling this book.

Dick Tracy #1, Mad Cave Studios
Dick Tracy is coming up on his 100th birthday, if you can believe it. Based on the Untouchable Eliot Ness, Tracy made his debut back on October 4, 1931. Writers Alex Segura and Michael Moreci team up with artist Geraldo Borges for an all-new, noir-infused chapter in the near-centenarian’s legacy.
Following World War II, the country stands frozen–waiting for the next shoe to drop. A brutal murder in The City draws the attention of rising star detective Dick Tracy, who soon discovers the bloodshed is just the beginning of a complicated web that threatens to ensnare everything he cares about.
Mad Cave touts this one as a hardboiled, realistic take on the yellow-coated sleuth. That sounds like it could go either way. We’ll see if this modern take remains true to the franchise’s rich history.

Spectregraph #1, DSTLRY
James Tynion IV and Christian Ward team up for DSTRLY’s new horror series.
This one is billed as ‘a ghost story steeped in the decay of a century of capitalism.’ A Los Angeles mansion has sat strangely for years, nestled into the coastline North of the city proper. Rumors have surrounded the place for years. The building’s owner is a Titan of American industry, with a strange fascination in the occult and the paranormal. For decades, the richest men and women in the country have whispered to each other, trying to understand what he was building alone in that mansion for all those years.
Now, finally, with his death, the estate is open for sale…
