‘Captain Phillips’ Cruising To 4K In Limited Edition Steelbook This July
by David Lewis
Warning: Pirating this disc may earn you a visit from SEAL Team Six.
The 2013 Best Picture nominee Captain Phillips is being released as a limited edition 4K Blu-ray steelbook in July from Sony Pictures.
Tom Hanks — in an Oscar-nominated performance — plays the title character, whose US container ship Maersk Alabama was hijacked by Somali pirates in 2009. Phillips and his crew are taken hostage, setting him, the pirate captain (Barkhad Abdi, also nominated for an Oscar), and the US Navy on a tragic collision course.

Director Paul Greengrass (United 93, several Jason Bourne films) and screenwriter Billy Ray (Richard Jewell) adapt Phillips’ best-selling memoir with nerve-wracking tension, injecting it with visceral, handheld action that leads to a powerful conclusion. The film also inspired countless “I’m the captain now” jokes, tributes, and memes. In fact, you probably said it out loud when you started reading this.
Captain Phillips will be presented in 4K resolution with Dolby Vision in Dolby Atmos and 5.1 sound. Special features include an audio commentary with Greengrass, behind-the-scenes featurettes, and the theatrical trailer.
The Captain Phillips limited edition 4K Ultra HD steelbook will be available July 16.
