Review: ‘Gargoyles: Quest’ #2 Goes Mid During A Journey

Writer Greg Weisman creates a relatively okay script. The main weaknesses are few, but rather evident. Flaw one is that Weisman jumps around in the sequence of events and starts at an odd moment in this issue. While the other flaw is more debatable. This flaw is just how the reading experience seems made more for reading from a collection than single issues.

Artist Pasquale Qualano and colorist Giovanna La Pietra are responsible for the interior visuals. These visuals are mostly good, but some of the perspectives and faces are odd.

Letterer Jeff Eckleberry assists the story greatly by appropriately placing the text in relevant places during a specific scene. Thus, Eckleberry potentially keeps the reader’s focus on both the text and art.

Artist Clayton Crain creates the visual one finds on covers A, D, and E. This is a rare case where this reviewer can’t decide whether the trade dress adds or takes away from the quality of the covers. However, it is clear that the effects and action in this image evoke an epic feeling. Also the colors enhance the explosion effect as well as the emotional atmosphere. Despite this being an overall high quality image the faces could probably use more development.

Covers C and G feature the same single image by artist Drew Moss. The only difference between the two covers is a lack of trade dress on the latter.

Variant covers B, F, and H feature the work of artist Jae Lee. While colorist June Chung provides hues on covers B and H. Lee does a nice job with the inks. Unfortunately, the lack of color on cover F makes the colorful trade dress clash with the image. Yet, Chung also goes a little too purple with Goliath. Nevertheless, the action somewhat helps distract from the color problem on covers B and H.
