‘The Georges Bess Horror Collection’ Graphic Novels Now Live On Kickstarter

Magnetic Press presents graphic novel adaptations of Victor Hugo‘s The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Bram Stoker‘s Dracula, and Mary Shelley‘s Frankenstein. The Georges Bess Classic Horror Collection of classic OGNs launches today on Kickstarter, including the newest addition to the series.

These three bold and seminal tales, clocking in at over 200 pages each, feature lush illustrations by Georges Bess, known internationally for his extensive body of work with writer and director Alejandro Jodorowsky. Bess established himself as a premiere visionary and stylistic chameleon at the height of the European comics renaissance during the ’70s and ’80s. While his illustrative talent and fluidity couldn’t be denied, the direction he would take a project was often unpredictable, an improvisational instinct that set him apart among peers such as Jean “Moebius” Giraud, Philippe Druillet, Milo Minara, and Claire Wendling. 

You may think you know Dracula, Frankenstein, and Quasimodo, but you have not seen them like this before.

These 9×12” hardcovers feature deluxe foil-stamped design elements on the cover, along with Magnetic Press’s signature curved corners. Printed on uncoated woodfree paper, Bess’ intricately detailed line art is reproduced at an archival level of quality. A limited edition, complete Boxed Set is also available exclusively through this Kickstarter campaign.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame

The newest book in the series adapts Victor Hugo’s gothic romance about the disfigured bell-ringer Quasimodo and his unrequited feelings for a beautiful dancer he falls in love with from a distance. Set in Paris during the turbulent 15th Century, this dark tragedy captures the extreme lengths passion can drive the human heart.

Dracula

This 224-page adaptation contains Bram Stoker’s complete original novel about the world-renowned vampire, plus an epilogue adapting Stoker’s short story “Dracula’s Guest” (believed to be the original novel’s deleted first chapter before later revived for publication two years after the author’s passing).

Frankenstein

Follow Shelley’s original novel about a scientist’s hubris and the pitiable creature who did not ask to be brought to life. Filled with page after page of stunning pen-and-ink drawings, readers will find themselves lost in each of these classic scenarios, content to soak in every detail before entering the next page. Reproducing Georges’ unprocessed illustration boards on uncoated woodfree paper, these artist-edition books will capture the tactile details of his work as if holding the originals.
