Explore A Magical American South In ‘South Of Midnight’
by Sage Ashford
Compulsion Games offered a first look at gameplay for their upcoming magical Deep South game, South of Midnight. Introduced during the Xbox Games Showcase last year, the title takes place after a massive hurricane. In the aftermath, the protagonist, Hazel, gains the unique magical power known as Weaving. With that power, she has the ability to gradually put together the fabric of the universe … so long as she’s willing to battle a wide variety of mythical creatures based on American South folktales.
South of Midnight is a massive change from Compulsion Games’ We Happy Few, but looks to be just as transformative. Fantasy settings these days are often the same — either some variation of high fantasy or a gritty Souls-like. South of Midnight not only offers a different setting, but a different type of protagonist. Hazel’s goals aren’t about winning battles but healing people and environments. The interview over at Xbox Wire goes in-depth on their approach and how they intend to make their fantasy action game different than everything else on the market. Besides, where else are people going to find a protagonist with a talking catfish as their magical guide?
South of Midnight launches on Xbox Series, Steam, and the Microsoft Store in 2025.
