ProgCore Fantasy: ‘Dark Age Of Theer’ Launches!

by Anton Kromoff

Welcome to the table,

Today is the day! The epic ProgCore Fantasy: Dark Age of Theer project by David Nett and Todd Stashwick has launched and it looks spectacular!

ProgCore Fantasy: Dark Age of Theer has set out to be a multimedia set of tools to add excitement and energy to your TTRPG table with a variety of sensory options including but not limited to…

  • A System Agnostic Sourcebook that can be paired with any Fantasy TTRPG or simply enjoyed for the stories and art within (with D&D5e conversion)
  • A Documentary Style Actual Play with exciting performers from across the pop culture space.
  • An animated Short, set in the Dark Age of Theer that will showcase the tone and Sword & Sorcery setting.
  • A Soundtrack Album with original music in the ProgCore style

If that was not enough, the team has also given us a peek at a library of stretch goals and add-ons, including an audiobook with stories from the core sourcebook, a custom-scented candle to enhance your in-person gaming experience, ProCore hats, T-shirts, and so much more.

The creators, players, and talented team behind this project are a who’s who of creatives from across the pop-culture landscape and the dynamic duo has called them all together under the banner of something that after talking to David for a while, I can say is just what the space needs right now.

For those wondering what the ProgCore Fantasy style is, it’s a style of storytelling that is deeply rooted in the intimate fantasy of the 1970s and 1980s. You can liken it to films like Rankin & Bass’s The Hobbit, Dragonslayer, Legend, Labyrinth, and Ladyhawke.

This is the kind of game you can sink into with music from Styx, King Crimson, Queen, or Rush playing in the background while surrounded by posters emblazoned with the art of  Michael Whelan, Erol Otus, and Bob Eggleton. It’s all of the beautiful and fun bits of the golden age of fantasy art and media without any of the systemic prejudices endemic to the era.

In a world where everything feels like it’s on fire what we can really use is progressive ideas, a welcoming place to play, and a moody and fun landscape to play in that feels both filled with danger and mystery but also totally accommodating and accessible to all who wish to venture into its witch-haunted woods and shadow-laden dungeons.

There is so much going on with this project and I will be covering more as things develop but for now, you can head over to the Kickstarter at this link and check out what is going on!

Until next time, I need to figure out if I’m going to play the Joker or the Thief.
