Black Widow Drawn Into War In New ‘Venom War: Venomous’ Variants

by Tony Thornley

Natasha Romanoff is one of Marvel’s most popular heroes. Lately though, she’s not been alone, as she’s bonded with a symbiote. In this summer’s Venom War event, she gets her own gooey miniseries.

In Venom War: Venomous from star creators Erica Schultz and Luciano Vecchio, Natasha’s bond with her symbiote is stronger than ever coming out of the soon-to-release Black Widow: Venomous one shot. With that partnership making Nat the most dangerous she’s ever been, the Black Widow begins a dangerous mission to discover dark secrets with Alchemax. But she’s not alone, as Agent Anti-Venom also is after what Alchemax is hiding.

The pair of new variants feature Black Widow’s new symbiote design from Derrick Chew and Vecchio. It’s a great merger of a traditional symbiote and the classic Black Widow look.

“I grow very attached to the characters I work with, so my current favorite is definitely Black Widow,” Vecchio told AIPT in a recent interview. “We got to revise and tweak her symbiote design, and I used the chance to link some of my favorite eras of her publishing history: Continuing the vibe of her last solo run by Thompson and Casagrande while linking it back to the classic Amazing Spider-Man #86 where Romita introduced her iconic leather jumpsuit. That issue connected Black Widow to the Spidey mythos in a way that we don’t usually think about, and now the Symbiote aspect brings everything full circle, thematically AND visually.”

Check out both covers, and watch for Venom War: Venomous #1 on August 21!
