Review: ‘Gargoyles: Quest’ #3 Is A Messy One

Writer Greg Weisman creates a script that is very reliant on remembering various past moments from this franchise’s history, including the cartoon show itself (Gargoyles [1994-1997]). This and the rushing around in both time and plot creates a great deal of narrative confusion.

Letterer Jeff Eckleberry uses a nice variety of fonts to differ certain characters. This variety will also assist those who may be more new to reading understand how to read this and other comics.

The interior visuals are by artist Pasquale Qualano and colorist Gioavanna La Pietra. Qualano does a great job at making the characters look consistently on model. Also there is some illusion of motion to even the very still images. Unfortunately, Qualano’s work has to jump around in time a lot and this hurts the visual pacing. La Pietra does a pretty good job of making the colors match those from the series. However, there are a panels where characters appear to have to slightly-off colors.

Artist Clayton Crain is responsible for covers A, D, and E. While all versions of the design work well the trade dress on Cover A actually makes it feel like a cover instead of a random piece of art.

Covers B, F, and H feature a design by artist Jae Lee. Also colorist June Chung provides hues for covers B and H. Lee’s line work is good, but the design feels off-kilter to this reviewer. Not to mention that the design arguably works best with Chung’s choice of a color palette and the addition of trade dress. When it comes to what makes Chung’s palette work it is simply the balancing of the colors.

Artist Drew Moss is the creator of the single design for covers C and G. While the background allows the generic image of Goliath to figuratively pop off the page the choice of color for the background is rather unappealing.
