Review: Tensions Flair And Blood Spills In ‘Plastic: Death & Dolls’ #3

Edwyn may be a serial killer but he does have morals too. Well, some. And while he has undoubtedly broken enough laws to see him sent away forever, so far he’s still free and dispensing his own brand of twisted justice. This means not everyone in his sights is guilty. But, in these moments of dispensing his rough justice, we get the more visceral moments in this issue, violently barging in and acting like a blood-curdling transition between more peaceful scenes.

It’s also another issue that delves deeper into Edwin’s childhood to try and give the reader some reasoning behind Edwyn’s predilection for plastic and killing. Although, the flashback in this issue only illustrates Edwyn’s mother’s poor taste in men. 

Edwyn is clearly someone who has suffered trauma in his past, but it’s also clear in Doug Wagner and artist Daniel Hillyard’s presentation of him that he was already a sick little puppy to begin with. Hanging out with his mother’s newest fella isn’t necessarily going to improve his mental well-being that’s for sure.

In the background we have the real threat beginning to build. And in the foreground, Edwyn gets a visit from unexpected house callers. It’s another well-balanced issue that builds tension from the very first page, as we pick up where we left off with Edwyn staring down a local bad boy, but always knows when to pop that bubble the winning black comedy that keeps the heightened tension at bay and readers like me coming back for more.
