Wizkids Delights With A Bone Roc That Rocks!

In the landscape of tabletop role-playing games, there are a ton of iconic monsters that deeply saturate fantasy settings. Merely starting to describe them at the gaming table can have a party of players immediately leaping to strategies of how they will dispatch them before you can even get out the entire description of what it is.
Beholders, Gelatinous Cubes, and Mind Flayers are easily some of the most iconic and recognizable creatures. The knowledge of how to fight these creatures and navigate encounters with them can sometimes unbalance the flow of a narrative. I often try and drop new monsters on my players. They have to problem-solve, and there is an aura of mystery that hangs over the encounters.
While I’m happy in my workshop building my own foes and fiends to set upon the table, I love it when core books give me new creatures to play with. I love it even more when my pals at WizKids drop epic minis to go with them.
One of the things I love about the recent Dungeons & Dragons Vecna: Eve of Ruin is that it feels like it takes things that are classic and gives new life to common creatures. In the case of the Bone Roc, “unlife.”
The sculpt on this mini is spectacular. The skeletal form makes sense at the table, and in a season where you start to see really goofy skeleton decorations on the shelves of Target and other stores in preparation for Spooky Season, we are all keenly aware how quickly a ‘skeleton’ anything can get silly quickly.
The Bon Roc is a fun encounter in the context of the Eve of Ruin adventure but also a really nice addition to the collection. The challenge rating is right in that sweet spot. It can work as a single combatant against a mid-level part, or as part of a flock or larger collection of creature combatants against a higher level group.
I also really like the pose of this miniature. It has a ton of energy as it could be in flight in an airborne combat setting, dropping from the sky to attack, or getting ready to lift off and take a party with it in its bone talons.
The scale is also fantastic. It really adds some immersion to the tabletop when you put it alongside medium and small minis. You really get a sense that this Huge Undead is dominating the landscape with its feathered bone wings outstretched and poised to cause absolute chaos.

Until next time, I’m personally binding one of these to an amulet in a dragon’s hoard to give the party a fighting chance against the dragon. They will essentially be dealing with the dragon’s minions while the Bone Roc and the White Dragon class above them sending debris and treasure crashing down causing even more area of effect damage. This is such a solid mini. I can’t wait to see what WizKids comes up with next!
