Jumping On: Series Premieres, One-Shots, And New Story Arcs Kicking Off On August 28, 2024

One of the most frustrating things about finding new comics to read and enjoy is finding a good jumping on point. It can be confusing and disheartening to pick up a single issue from the middle of an arc without having the context of the previous chapters.

With that in mind, here are a few New Story Arcs, Series Premieres, and One-Shots that caught my eye for this upcoming New Comic Book Day, Wednesday, August 28, 2024.

Aliens vs. Avengers #1, Marvel

When Marvel picked the Aliens license back up in 2020, you knew this mashup would be inevitable. While the new stuff has been hit or miss, this one definitely has potential with Jonathan Hickman penning the script, Esad Ribić on lines, and Ive Svorcina on colors. It’s going to be a wild four-parter when the perfect killing machine meets a planet of superheroes. Not taking sides, but… if the xenomorphs lose, we riot.

Venom War: Zombiotes #1, Marvel

Symbiotes and zombies. Dead? Alive? Both? As the two Venoms face off, a darker strain of symbiote has slithered across New York City… one that can reanimate the dead and turn the living into an engine of mindless hunger with just one bite. Zombie symbiotes making symbiote zombies. Dead brilliant. Let’s go!

The Cursed Library: Alpha #1, Archie Comics

Eliot Rahal goes back to the well with co-writer Magdalene Visaggio, artist Craig Cermac, colorist Matt Herms, and letterer Jack Morelli. All the horror one-shots have led us to The Cursed Library. Jinx has the former Queen of the Underworld trapped in the mysterious library, as her father-bestowed demon powers have intensified. To stop Jinx from becoming like her father, her best friend Danni Malloy must rescue and convince Madam Satan to guide her through Hell itself to find the one thing that can possibly save her friend’s soul––Jinx’s mom.
