PlayStation’s ‘Astro Bot’ Gets Its Only Piece Of Marketing In Its Launch Trailer

by Sage Ashford

It seems like there would be no way PlayStation would be about to launch an entirely new entry in a fledgling franchise with next to zero marketing.  Yet here we are, as Team ASOBI is putting out one of the few trailers for Astro Bot the game’s at the State of Play in the summer…and it’s a launch trailer?

The PlayStation blog has a ton of information about the launch trailer, at least:

“Let’s start up with new worlds and new gameplay, introducing Handy-D, a cheeky monkey on Astro’s back that lets Astro climb, swing, and slam using its giant hands. This is a returning mechanic we’re taking to a fuller level by mixing it with the core platforming.

You will also find Muteki (which means invincible in Japanese), a fitting name for Astro’s iron armor that lets him roll around spiky areas, fit inside tight spaces or get blasted like a cannonball! Finally, you’ll also catch a glimpse of Astro turning into a tiny weeny mouse which makes the world, and every surrounding stomp feel huge through the DualSense wireless controller. One of our favorites right there!”

There’s a lot more at the PlayStation blog, but more importantly there’s also a series of Behind the Scenes videos that are launching for Astro Bot starting with the first episode, entitled “Crafted Gameplay”, focusing on what it takes to make a platformer feel good:

There’s five more of these scheduled, presumably between now and release day. But it really does feel like the marketing for this should’ve started much sooner.  Ah well.  This game looks amazing, so hopefully awesome word of mouth will be enough to push this title forward.

Astro Bot launches on September 6th.
