Anton’s Toy Box: Venom Week Edition

Welcome to the table,

It’s Goo-Monster Week over here at Comicon. What does that mean? It means Tony said we can all talk about Venom as much as we want. Seeing as I’ve been a fan of the Lethal Protector since back in the ‘Eddy Brock Venom was on sparkly comic covers’ days, or the early 1990s for those keeping track at home, I was all for it.

One of the coolest things about Venom for me was how much more imposing he looked as a toy compared to the Spider-Man toys. My first Venom action figure was the 1992 ToyBiz Venom figure with the flicking tongue and clip-on symbiote chest plate.

I would often wear the chest plate as a ring out and about because I was a child, and as a child, you do stuff like that and imagine how cool it would be to have goo-monster powers. Over the years there has been a slew of other Venom toys that have come out, and while none have come close to that classic nostalgia-laden figure from my youth, some of the newest offerings on the market are pretty rad.

All that being said, may I present… Anton’s Toy Box, Venom Edition.

1. Bandai Spirits S.H.Figuarts line Venom, from the movie Venom: Let There Be Carnage

First up on the stack is the S.H.Figuarts line Venom from the movie Venom: Let There Be Carnage. This brilliantly crafted plastic pal stands 7.5 inches tall and comes with three head sculpts, two pairs of interchangeable hands, two back tentacles, and a rad Venom symbiote head and pedestal to recreate the Venom popping out of Tom Hardy’s back and talking to him moments from the film.

2. Kaiyodo Reissue of the Marvel Amazing Yamaguchi Revoltech NR061 Agent Venom

Next on the stack is the Reissue of the Marvel Amazing Yamaguchi Revoltech NR061 Agent Venom Action Figure. It’s hard for me not to love this figure. Cullen Bunn‘s run on Agent Venom was some of the best storytelling with a disabled lead I have ever seen in a mainstream comic. The way he handled the guilt and grief of being a disabled person who uses a chair without making it feel like he was pandering is nothing short of award-worthy.

This figure is stellar, with six alternate pairs of hands, three alternate pairs of eyes, a belt, four ammunition bags, eight symbiote tentacles, four guns, four gun grips, four holsters, four muzzle fire effects (these are so rad), a freaking grenade launcher, symbiote weapon, and two blasts of spider silks. This thing is fantastic and I dig it. It also has a big price tag, but you get a ton for the money in my opinion. You can pre-order at this link.

3. Bandai Spirits Tech-On Avengers S.H.Figuarts Tech-On Venomized Wolverine Action Figure

Next up is the is the Tech-On Avengers S.H.Figuarts Tech-On Venomized Wolverine Action Figure. It’s a Venom Wolverine. I mean… that is how you use to sell comics back in the day. You slap Wolverine on the cover and if you get really wild you give him some kind of new funky gimmick.

In Web of Venom: Ve’Nam #1, Logan actually wears a Symbiote so that may make him the first Venom on Earth 616… more keen minds will need to check me on that, but I am pretty sure it at least makes him one of the first. Anyway, this figure is far from that rad red spiral-headed monstrosity that was trying to take out Nick Fury, Logan and the gang, this guy is still pretty cool though. It comes with two pairs of hands, a wire claw whip, a set of repulsor effects, and a stand. You can pick him up while supplies last at this link.

4. Hasbro Venom Marvel Legends Ghost-Spider (Venompool BAF)

Next on the stack is one of my favorites. The design of Ghost-Spider Venom is easily one of the coolest things I have seen done with the symbiote ever. It’s a hoodie with teeth. I would 100% wear a hoodie with teeth. If they made a hoodie with teeth on it that looked like the Venom symbiote on this thing, I would buy it and wear it in a non-cos play sort of way. Just an around the town, “oh… my hoodie, does it have teeth, why yes it does, thank you for noticing lady at the Target.” kind of way.

5. Hasbro Marvel Legends Series 3.75-inch Retro 375 Collection Venom

Last on this list, but not least in the least bit, is the Hasbro Marvel Legends Series 3.75-inch Retro 375 Collection Venom. From its simple toy design to the cool retro card and blister, it comes with, this is easily one of my favorite toys on this list. It’s the kind of thing that is priced in a way you could easily buy two of, pop one out and just have it on your desk to play with and have another to display on your shelf as it has so much shelf appeal with that retro card back.
