‘Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom’ Set To Dominate Theaters This November

There are some fun anime out there that fit in that perfect cross-section of grim dark and goofball and Overlord is for sure one of them. I mean that in the best possible way. Sometimes you just want to sit back and watch something with amazing art, cool combat, and the occasional salaryman turned ancient undead wizard god. Let’s face it. I have watched One Piece nine times now, and have to find other things to watch now and again.

I also like Overlord because it goes from something akin to Blade Runner, to something like a grim-dark-goofy-Dungeons & Dragons game gone sideways.

For those of you who don’t know the story, Overlord was originally a web novel by Kugane Maruyama that was adapted into light novels and manga publications, the first season of the anime series debuted in 2017. The story follows Momonga who is a regular salaryman who leads a guild in a MMORPG, which is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game, and after playing this game for twelve years the servers are being shut down.

Momonga logs in for the last time to watch the game in but when the clock strikes midnight, nothing happens. Momonga then realizes he is stuck playing the game forever as he has been transported from his dystopian 2138 future world full of dead orphans in the streets and moms who work themselves to death to this fantasy landscape where he rises in the ranks to become the Sorcerer King Ains Ooal Gown.

Crunchyroll, the best solution for streaming anime I have found, announced that the tickets for the new movie Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom are going on sale for the United States and Canada audiences. The film that’s distributed by Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment, will be released starting November 8th and will be available in Japanese with English subtitles as well as dubbed in English for audiences who prefer to enjoy their anime that way. Either way is fine and you will get zero judgment from me.

Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom is the first theatrical film from the Overlord franchise, and continues the series picking up after the conclusion of Season 4. When a call for help comes from a neighboring land, an unlikely alliance forms between enemies to defeat the new threat of the Demon Emperor Jaldabaoth and his large army of demi-humans who are jeopardizing the peace of the land.

All four seasons of Overlord are now available to stream on Crunchyroll so you have time to catch up before the film’s release!
