One of the most enjoyable experiences I have had as a journalist is getting to sit down with brilliant storyteller and star of stream and screen Anjali Bhimani. What did we talk about? Well aside from her love for Dungeons & Dragons, her upcoming projects, and her thoughts on storytelling, we talked about dice. What dice in particular? The classic D&D dice we played with in our youth. The kind we had to draw the numbers on using a wax crayon or marker.

FanRoll’s Retro Holmes Replica dice set celebrates the 50th Anniversary of D&D. It is a pretty rad little set of dice, and it is on my 2024 Gift Guide for Gamers. If you missed out on the original dice back in the day it’s not a huge deal. I inherited the set I was able to use for a while second hand from one of the elder nerds who shaped my childhood.
The set is a pretty spot-on remake of the originals. Granted they look way less grubby out of the rad FanRoll box, but they are really true to the roots with the unpainted numbers and correct colors for the dice. They also have a feel to them that just seems right, and they roll like a dream with great table scatter.
I like to showcase items that work for players of all sorts. For collectors this hits the mark with a rad well made box, dice that feel current but also classic, and the novelty of being old and new at the same time. For those new to the table this is also a really fun way to experience a bit of the 1970s style of gaming. You are coloring in here not just writing your own numbers on the dice, but never the less, this is pretty fun just for that.
