TV Review: ‘Superman & Lois’ Leaves Fans On A Grim Cliffhanger

There’s no denying that Superman & Lois has been great at building drama and tension amongst its characters. Every episode seems to up the stakes as Lex Luthor (Michael Cudlitz) tightens his grip around Clark (Tyler Hoechlin) and Lois (Elizabeth Tulloch). This week’s episode continues that trend as it appears Luthor may get away with everything as he uses his financial power to bully Lois around. However, it’s great to watch Superman battle Lex physically while Lois handles him in a legal sense. The show appears to to be building towards a grand finale, but after seeing the Kent family suffer so much, the show needs to turn a corner.

With Superman’s health failing and Luthor making upgrades to the suit he stole, Clark realizes his boys need to be ready to fight soon. He takes them to the Fortress to train, but they aren’t strong enough yet. So he tries to have them work together as a team instead. Meanwhile, Lois talks to Bruno Mannheim (Chad Coleman) to find a new way to take down Luthor. She believes the secret is to form a wedge between him and Amanda (Yvonne Chapman). Unfortunately, Lex learns where Doomsday is and kills the creature again, turning him into his ultimate form straight from the comics.

Although the drama and tension are some of the best superhero television has to offer, the show is getting pretty bleak at this point. The prospects of the Kent family making it out of this situation unscathed is dwindling rapidly. The show even ends on a brutal cliffhanger as it appears Clark is once again going to die in battle with Doomsday. Hopefully, the series will form some sort of a happy ending for its viewers tonight, who have been put through the ringer this season. If not, this great superhero show may be tarnished by an unnecessarily depressing ending.
