Review: ‘Gargoyles Quest’ #5 Retreads Old Ground

Writer Greg Weisman finishes up this last issue with a script that is at best decent. Unfortunately, the script is only decent since it moves the lore forward, and Weisman keeps the personalities consistent. Without these two points Weisman would have a rather mediocre story. This is because fans of the show are familiar with various parts of the plot due to season 2 of the cartoon (Gargoyles 1994-1997). Also the final page has a cliffhanger that makes no logical sense due to a lack of any type of set-up.

Artists Pasquale Qualano and Gerardo Gambone have a similar enough art style that readers should not have a jarring moment with. Though colorist Giovanna La Pietra does a good job at helping make the two art styles seem as if they are one. Qualano and Gambone do a great job on proportions, but not so much with moments of action. They both create poses that verge on just about to be dynamic characterization. However, they keep things on model, and both do a fine job with proportions. When it comes to coloring Giovanna La Pietra arguably goes too extreme with the hues due to how overly vibrant some of them are.

Letterer Jeff Eckleberry does a great job with placing the word balloons and anchors. Without Eckleberry’s efforts this issue might be hard to follow due to the abundance of text and characters speaking.

The cover designs are by artists Drew Moss and Jae Lee. Colorist June Chung provides for Lee the hues on covers B and H. Lee has a more realistic style which has more texture and lines than Moss’s more cartoon accurate style. Nevertheless, both styles feel true to the franchise, at least as far as these cover designs go. As for the coloring, Chung and Moss both seem about equal in quality when it comes to their palette choices.
