Operation: Monster Force Files — Delta Red Nocturnal Ops Trooper

The Forgotten King has returned. To combat him, Dracula has been awakened. To prevent the Forgotten King from using his ability to cloud men’s minds, Dracula’s blood has been used to create a formula that can temporarily transform soldiers into vampiric supermen. With the Delta Red unit defending them, humanity has a chance.

Continuing our look at Big Bad Workshop and Fresh Monkey Fiction’s Operation: Monster Force, we’re next looking at Delta Red, the “good guy” troop builder figure of the line.

I’m going to say it right away, I was immediately smitten by this figure. Top to bottom, the Delta Red (specifically the Delta Red Nocturnal Operations Trooper) is a well designed, highly customizable figure full of accessories.

The box is fantastic from go. The design is eye-catching, and the box itself and packaging are high quality. The inside flap has a comic page with each character’s backstory, although no writer or artists are clearly credited. It would be a great in-box piece, but legitimately, this is not an in-box figure.

The base figure out of the package is solid. I’ll repeat one thing Scott and Erik both mentioned in their reviews. The figure was relatively stiff out of the packaging. I did give him a quick warm water bath. Just fill a deep mug or tall cup with hot water that’s just barely bearable to put your hand in it, and dip it in for two to three minutes. Let it cool for a couple minutes after you remove it. From that point forward, the joints moved like butter.

From there I had a lot of fun customizing and posing the figure. Out of the box, the figure has the un-helmeted vampire head, and some basic gear attached to its vest. I had to attach the holsters and shoulder pads. The holsters I did have to slip on by removing the legs, but they were easy to pop on and off while the figure was still warm from his bath. From there I spent the next hour customizing the figure.

This is a troop builder figure in all the best ways. A fan could buy at least five or six copies of this figure and customize them each in completely different ways before you start repeating yourself. There are three different heads- the base unhelmeted head, a helmeted head with a visor (which can be swapped with another visor), and a fully masked head with glowing eyes. My personal favorite of the bunch is probably the helmeted with the visor bearing a red skull insignia.

The accessories are fantastic. There’s a variety of weapons with effects (my 9 year old’s favorite part). There’s multiple snap-on accessories for his vest and belt, and everything can be moved and rearranged. Also, because of its 1/12 scale, a collector could very easily swap accessories with other figures in the scale like Marvel Legends, G.I. Joe Classified and Star Wars Black Series.

There are a couple small downsides to the figure. Like I said, it is stiff out of the box, so don’t try to force any joints. Certain combinations of accessories can make some posing more difficult (it took a few minutes of fiddling to get the pose on the cover of the box). Lastly, the figure has three guns — an assault rifle and two handguns — and the smallest of them does not have a holster that it fits in.

Frankly though, all three of those issues are extremely minor. I honestly only mention them to be straightforward in saying flaws exist. They’re easy to overlook because the figure is that good.

This is easily my figure of the year, and I’m not saying that lightly. It’s dynamic, looks great, and most importantly was fun to play with.
