Ack ack!
After years of waiting, the rematch between Red Sonja and the Martians of the Mars Attacks trading cards is on in Red Sonja Attacks Mars, the upcoming series from Dynamite, writer Jay Stephens and artist Fran Strukan — who returns from the first series. This time, though, it’s Sonja who goes on the offensive.
The tale finds her dealing with a life-debt, but soon learns a prophecy about a “cosmic foulness” set to invade. To stop the destruction of Hyrkania and the rest of the world she knows, the She Devil with a Sword must trek far across it to battle with the aliens who once again threaten the realm. And just for good measure, she will also take on various trials, serpent-men, metamorlocks, and ancient monster-gods. The company promises it will be a mix of “retro science fiction, sword and sorcery action, and dark comedy” with a “special Neapolitan twist.”
In a statement, Stephens said, “I’m having such a blast! It feels like you could see me drooling over my Norman Saunders (the original Mars Attacks! card creator) art book, which I do more often than would be considered sane … Campy, horrifying, mid-century, and notorious does seem to be my vibe. I’m always striving for that re-imagined nostalgia … a sort of irreverent reverence for the things that haunted me as a kid.”
Supporting the book will be covers from Joseph Michael Linsner, Jae Lee, and Greg Land. Additionally, each cardstock variant cover of the first issue will be bagged with “exclusive collectible cards featuring the piece from the respective artists, free of trade dress.”
Red Sonja Attacks Mars #1 is set for release this March.
