Art For Art’s Sake #294: Vertigo House Ads – Windows Into The Past

by Richard Bruton

Here we go again with another spin around some cool comic art with your regular Art For Art’s Sake… shall we?

Delving into my little collection of house ads from the glory days of Vertigo now, back to 1995, 1996, and 1997, very much still in that first blush of success with Karen Berger at the helm. Classic comics, gorgeous art, the finest artists. It was a really strong imprint, dominated still by another British invasion but beginning to branch out and bring in more and more talent. This was still the time when seeing a new Vertigo title meant that you knew you had to at least give it a try.

With the recent announcement that DC are bringing the imprint back as DC Vertigo, you can only hope they manage to catch the magic once more…

Let’s start with one of my favourites from 1995, the brilliant teen romance and rebellion one-shot that was Grant Morrison and Philip Bond‘s Kill Your Boyfriend

Three from Duncan Fegredo now…

Glyn Dillon

Richard Case

Steve Dillon

Phil Winslade

Sean Phillips

.

Okay, now heading on another year… 1996, and more from Duncan Fegredo

Peter Kuper

Steve Dillon

Sean Phillips

Teddy Kristiansen

Tim Truman

Frank Quitely

Michael Lark

And we’ll end 1996 with this beauty from Daniel Torres

.

Now, into 1997… beginning with a couple of ads featuring those fabulous Brian Bolland Invisibles covers…

Steve Dillon/Glenn Fabry

Glenn Fabry/Warren Pleece

Sean Phillips

John Higgins

Ted McKeever

John Bolton

Guy Davies
