Directed by Marcell Jankovics, Son of the White Mare is a psychedelic animated fantasy based on Hungarian folklore. The film follows three brothers on their quest to rescue three maidens from three multi-headed dragons. Fans of Genndy Tartakovsky and Cartoon Saloon rejoice, Son of the White Mare is a masterclass of timeless graphic design and vibrant hand-drawn animation. There were multiple moments where my jaw literally dropped when watching the film.
While most animation that’s even a little trippy gets labeled as psychedelic, Son of the White Mare embodies a true psychedelic experience. There are moments of wonder, fear, humor, and a primal sense of unity with nature. The heroes, princesses, and dragons are more than just fairy tale tropes. The characters are personifications of the seasons and the monsters represent chaos, war, and industrialization.
If you’re a fan of animation, mythology, and profoundly personal artistic expression then you need to see Son of the White Mare.
