What Was The Best Of 2000 AD In 2024? The Results Are In!

Every year 2000 AD asks its readers what they thought the best covers and strips were, and here are the results for 2024!
My love of all things 2000 AD comes to you here at Comicon with the Weekly 2000 AD and the Monthly Megazine, together with previewing and reviewing the plentiful releases from 2000 AD and the Treasury of British Comics. Truly, it’s a great, great time to be sharing in the world of 2000 AD, with it’s near 50-year history full of incredible works — and right now, it’s in fine, fine form.
So, as with all years, the readers of The Galaxy’s Greatest were asked to vote on favourite covers and strips by 2000 AD, and the results are in. So, what did the readers vote as their favourite covers and series for 2024? Let’s start with the covers…
Favourite 2000 AD Cover of the Year: Paul Williams, Prog 2407

Favourite Judge Dredd Megazine Cover of the Year: Nick Percival (Megazine #474)
Well, you can’t argue with either of those covers as best-of-year worthy, can you? Both of them absolutely iconic portraits of Dredd by two cracking artists: Paul Williams and Nick Percival.
Williams’ cover was particularly well-timed, coming as it did on the day after the US election — complete with a slightly wrong US flag. Would be good to see both more of Williams’ covers in 2025 and maybe a strip inside the Prog.
Percival’s typically beautifully grotesque wraparound cover features a Dredd undergoing psychic attack, a hint of what was happening in the Mike Carroll-written and Percival drawn Memory lane one-off inside. There’s more coming from Percival on Dredd soon in 2025, as Ken Niemand and he continue their exploration of the horrors in Mega-City One in The Shift, starting Prog 2418.

Favourite 2000 AD Story of the Year: ‘Judge Dredd: A Better World’ by Rob Williams, Arthur Wyatt & Henry Flint
Favourite Judge Dredd Megazine Story of the Year: ‘Lawless: A Town Called Badrock’ by Dan Abnett & Phil Winslade
Well, three more picks you just can’t really argue with. Although the Scream Archive Edition is more Treasury of British Comics than 2000 AD proper. But what the hell, it was a gorgeous thing, collecting absolutely every strip from the short but much-loved 15-issue run of the 1980s Brit horror comics anthology.
As for the Megazine favourite strip being Lawless: A Town Called Badrock, well I wouldn’t argue that one at all. Sure, there’s plenty of incredibly good strips in the 12 monthly issues of the Megazine every year, but this Dan Abnett and Phil Winslade-created strip, now over a decade old, has consistently been just an incredible read. Over the course of the many series now, we’ve all grown to love to thrill to the adventures of Marshal Metta Lawson making her way as the law in the remote frontier township of Badrock. And A Town Called Badrock, even though we only saw three episodes in 2024, continues the greatness.
And finally, absolutely deservedly, we have the best 2000 AD story of the year – Judge Dredd: A Better World. It was the story that ripped the world of Dredd apart, made the Judges (and the readers) question whether the Law of Dredd truly was the only way, and had us all pulling for Judge Maitland, whose tale we’ve seen play out over several years now. In A Better World, Rob Williams, Arthur Wyatt, and Henry Flint brought that story to a close — it’s something quite amazing, powerful, heartbreaking, and a truly great Dredd that’s right up there with the best of them. The collection of this (and plenty of similarly essential stories leading up to it) comes out on 25th January — you should have it on your shelves.
