The Race Is On Again In Dynamite’s ‘Giant-Size Wacky Races’

Muttley laughs again.

In 1968, Hanna-Barbera launched a cartoon called Wacky Races. Centered on a series of races to determine a weekly winner, it featured a wide assortment of characters like Penelope Pitstop and Dirk Dastardly, who — with his dog, Muttley — tried to find other ways to secure victory. The show resurfaced from time to time, allowing subsequent generations to discover the characters and Muttley’s signature laugh.

Now the races are on again as Dynamite announced on Thursday Giant-Sized Wacky Races, a special honoring the animated series. Writer Ivan Cohen, artist Mariano Benitez Chapo, and colorist Nick Capon renew the competition.

“After teaming a cartoon dog and his crime-solving pals with a brooding billionaire vigilante [in The Batman & Scooby-Doo Mysteries], the logical next step in my career was to update the classic Wacky Races for the 2020s, blending the original cartoon with elements of pro wrestling, action films, and a hint of Furiosa for good measure,” Cohen said in a statement. “Editor Joe Rybandt gave me and artists Mariano Benitez Chapo and Nick Caponi the keys, and we’d really prefer not to give them back any time soon. I can’t wait for readers to see where we are taking Penelope Pitstop and the cast of the Wacky Races. To call it a wild ride is an understatement.”

This time, Penelope and the mysterious racing legend Peter Perfect face off against Dastardly in a 40-page race to the finish line with cardstock covers at Dynamite’s standard price.

Supporting the one-shot will be covers from Joseph Michael Linsner, Edwin Galmon, and Robert Hack.

Giant-Size Wacky Races hits the starting line this April.
