Wizkids Conjures The Wrath Of Undead Dragons With Their ‘Black Dracolich’ Mini

When I was a kid, there was an older kid in the neighborhood who was not exactly a nerd or a gamer. He did have a bunch of blacklight posters, incense burners, and decorative weapons strewn about his room. One of the posters was of a painting by Clyde Caldwell of a woman casting lighting-like magic at the animated skeleton of a dragon in some dark underground chamber.

I think I was around 10 years old, maybe younger. I was fascinated with how the dragon’s skeleton was animated. The image planted a seed that would result in me digging through whatever material I could get my hands on to uncover a creature who would become a favorite of mine over the years.

The reanimated dragon is a thing known as a dracolich. The one in the painting was named Rauglothgor but there are many scattered across the multiverse. Dracolich are dragons who give up their life and bind their soul to an item or object, known as a phylactery.

Once bound and free from the fear of death, the dragon’s soul can possess any dead reptilian body it comes across or that is prepared for it by its priests, worshipers, or foolishly bamboozled cohorts. The newly possessed corpse retains all the powers and abilities the dragon had in life. It also has the powers and abilities that come with being undead.

There is so much you can do with a Dracolich at your table. It brings me a ton of joy that my pals at WizKids are dropping a new D&D Icons of the Realm: Black Dracolich mini just in time for my newest campaign. This black dracolich is gargantuan-sized with a 100mm clear plastic base.

One of my favorite things WizKids does with their pre-painted miniatures is the semitransparent materials they use. This mini is covered in it, giving it an unearthly spectral presence at the table. The whole piece stands over 8″ tall and has a ton of table impact and shelf appeal.
