Confessions Of A Sinner: ‘The Power Fantasy’ #8 Advance Review

With several points in the timeline writer Kieron Gillen has mapped out fro this series now established in the readers mind, the fragmented narrative of this issue is not as much of a struggle, leaving fans to rather focus on the confessions of Eliza Hellbound and her backstory as recounted in The Power Fantasy #8.

The Second Summer of Love is upon us and ten years after the alien Queen who landed and got everyone high we get to hear Eliza’s confessions as well as learn more about her own faith. Someone who has sinned by making a Faustian pact with Hell but unlike Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus, Eliza understands that God is forgiving. God would not turn it’s back on the faithful, of which Eliza counts herself as one.

We jump from Manchester in 1999 to Brixton in 1985 and 1986 and beyond, all the while learning more about Eliza as well as not forgetting about the other Atomics out there in the wider world.

And with each era, artist Caspar Wijngaard, has also established a definitive artistic take seen in the past seven issues that also help remind the reader which era we are visiting. His artwork, and varied styles, thereby adds further depth to this storyline, with careful consideration of each setting when it comes to his takes on Gillen’s script. This variation in styles and interesting layouts easily make your forget you are essentially reading a rather theological discussion as Eliza aims to justify her action to both Valeria and thereby the reader. Eliza know her sin, but also has faith in a God who she’s knows will be there for her. But, it’s also a blindspot, as blind faith can often be.

Another fascinating issue that gives a voice to Eliza as well as a backstory and her sacrifice for the greater good. A bitter-sweet tale that still has a lot more tragedy to come, methinks.
