Criminals Turned Warriors In Feudal Japan: ’11 Rebels’ Trailer

by Tito W. James

Directed by Kazuya Shiraishi, 11 Rebels follows ten convicts who are promised freedom in exchange for defending a small town in feudal Japan. But when the officials who recruited them renege on their promise, the warriors realize they’ve been used as pawns in a larger scheme. It’s good to see more Japanese-produced samurai epics. 11 Rebels has the classic ‘few vs many’ dynamic that’s core to some of the best Akira Kurosawa narratives.

“Amidst the Boshin War’s brutal conflicts, a motley squad of criminals and samurai undertakes a desperate defense of a fortress, their stand triggered by clashing interests of the Shibata clan, the shogunate, and the new government.”  (source: IMDb)
