NHK World Japan takes us behind the scenes into the world of Anime adaptations of American comic books. With the rise in Anime’s popularity, we’re seeing more blending between American and Japanese animation. Whether it’s an anime-styled show like My Adventures with Superman —or more recently, fully original anime productions featuring American superheroes like Suicide Squad Isekai or Batman Ninja vs Yakuza League.

It’s fascinating to look behind the scenes and understand the creative process from a Japanese perspective. I was surprised to learn how the creators embraced misinterpretation as a source of creativity. There seems to be an obsession in America with maintaining “authenticity”– both to the comic book source material and Japanese culture. However, taking a more laid back approach with the comic book lore and leaning into Japanese Pop-Culture appears to have yielded some really interesting and original productions.

Some fear that Anime’s popularity and fusion with American IP will lead to watered down anime and un-American superheroes. While there is always room for scepticism, I feel that trusting unique creators to do their job has yielded fresh and exciting interpretations of classic characters. As a fan of anime and superhero comics, I can say that it’s a great time to be alive.
