Wizkids Brings Swamp Creatures And Gruesome Ghosts To The ‘D&D’ Table

One of the coolest things about the WizKids Dungeons & Dragons Icons of the Realms sets is when they drop a block of creatures that are not attached to any book or adventure in particular. Previous WizKids sets like Seas & Shores and Sand & Stone have had amazing offerings like Crab Folk (a personal favorite mini of mine) and the Mummy Lord that have looked absolutely rad when they have hit the table.

Their upcoming set Dungeons & Dragons Icons of the Realms: Ghost Light is no exception when it comes to having some really rad creatures to add to your collector’s shelf and gaming table.

Ghost Light has a haunted swamp theme. From what we have seen from the renders for the set so far, these minis are going to fit perfectly into adventures through witch-haunted bogs and danger filled ancient ruins. I don’t have a full scope of the minis in this set yet, but from what I can recognize so far there are some real winners I am going to need to add to my miniature shelves.

Out of the gate, the Bodak is one of my favorite higher-level challenge rating monsters. These undead husks are the animated remains of those who followed Orcus, the demon lord of undeath. These horrible creatures are driven to cause death and destruction and they have some seriously cool abilities like it’s aura of annihilation and it’s death gaze that allow it to do just that.

While they seem to be little more than the hollow skin of undead humanoids with weird, descended slack mouth holes and a hole in their chest where their heart once was, these awful undead creatures are some of the coolest encounters you can throw at a mid- to high-level party to really send a chill down their spines. The fact this is included in the new set really makes me super happy.

I’ve been a fan of the Girallon since 3rd Edition D&D. This undead zombie version just takes these cool creatures to a whole new level of horror. The Girallon are territorial four armed ape creatures who I have always had inhabit the deep jungles of whatever world my party has been playing in.

We saw a zombie variation in the Tomb of Annihilation. The mini from this upcoming set seems to be a perfect fit for not only that adventure, but other times at your table where you want to unleash a unique undead threat to cause some chaos without having to field and entire undead hoard.

One of the things WizKids does a really good job with is their various Mimic variants. I personally have a few treasure chests, a water bucket, and a birthday cake mimic that all look really cool on my collector’s shelf.

This set has what appears to be a Mimic Raft. That is an absolute delight. This is the kind of versatile miniature that I think will really help flesh out swamp, river, and even lost at sea adventures in a really fun way. I had not, up to the point I had seen this thing, considered ambushing my party with one of these, but every since I saw this render I knew I would need to figure out how to work in this carnivorous raft into my game.

As someone who writes deep sea adventures on the regular for the Outer Seas game setting, this is the kind of thing that hits home for me in a major way and I absolutely love and think it is going to look stellar at the table.

There are plenty more creatures set to be released in this 46 miniature set and when I have an idea of what the full list is I will circle back and we will dig into them some more!
