Review: ‘The Season’ #5 Goes Back Up In Quality

The two covers are by artists Paul Azaceta and Bengal, respectively. Azaceta’s cover in contrast to Bengal’s cover has more depth to it. While Bengal’s cover features whimsical horror versus Azaceta’s cover which is more straight up horror. Though the latter comparison is partly because of the choices in color palettes. Despite the differences both are high quality pieces. Nevertheless, if this reviewer must choose which cover arguably fits with the interior narrative’s tone it would have to be Azaceta’s.

The interior visuals are by Paul Azaceta and colorist Matheus Lopes. When it comes to the depth of the interior art it is much like Azaceta’s cover in creating great dimensional layering. This is explicitly clear on certain pages where there is a plethora of elements. Azaceta also does amazingly well with rendering the facial expressions, especially for the main character Spring Seasons. Lopes’s choice of hues are mostly dark partly because of time frame and partly because of atmosphere and locale. It is worth mentioning that this amount of darkness in the palette adds menace and dread to the narrative.

Writer Rick Remender creates another great script. The dialogue never strays from being important and believable. Though Remender does not address a certain character suddenly speaking to one of the leads. Yet, this bit will probably see addressing in a future issue. When it comes to the plot moving forward there is also significant momentum. However, some may not like how quickly certain major plot points come into the narrative. Nevertheless, these major plot points will most definitely not see resolution in the sixth issue.

Letterer Rus Wooton does a great job at correctly bolding select words to emphasize them. Not to mention that Wooton’s personal style to the lettering works well with the visuals, particularly the more whimsical parts.

The Seasons #5 sees release from Image Comics and Giant Generator on June 25.
