Commentary: Reporters Are The Real Heroes Of ‘Superman’

There’s no denying that Superman is jam-packed with a colorful cast of characters. The fact that it’s overloaded with too many superheroes is one of the criticisms the movie has received. But it’s also interesting to note which characters actually save the day at the end of the film. Of course, the movie has giant CGI battles with monsters and superpowered beings, but the real stakes of the film didn’t involve physical strength at all. The movie is largely about public perception and image. In this regard, the real heroes of the film who take down the villain are actually the reporters.
As is the case with most superhero stories, Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) wants to bring Superman (David Corenswet) down in the public eye. What starts off as a physical battle becomes a war of messaging as Lex tarnishes Superman’s relationship by revealing the truth behind his Kryptonian legacy. However, Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) realizes that Lex has been working behind the scenes to orchestrate the entire plot. Alongside Jimmy Olsen (Skyler Gisondo), the two piece together the entire story. It’s only after Perry White (Wendell Pierce) approves their article for publication that readers and influencers learn the truth and Lex is brought down for good.
It’s important to note that Superman beats his physical challenges before the article is released. There are no more physical threats for Lex to challenge Superman with and, yet, the battle still isn’t over. Lex is still a free man and Superman can’t do anything against him. It’s only after Lois and the others reveal the truth that Lex is brought down and arrested for his crimes. The battle in the film isn’t necessarily one of strength, but one of reputation and public image. So in reality, the reporters are the real heroes who saved the day and brought down Lex Luthor.
Superman is now in theaters.
