SDCC 2025: Dynamite Announces The Next Phase Of The Machines With ‘The Terminator: Metal’

The machines are ready for their next comic book evolution.

Dynamite announced Friday the launch of The Terminator: Metal, the next phase in its Terminator comic book line following a year of stories by writer Declan Shalvey and various artists. Shalvey returns to lead Metal with the addition of Spawn veteran Rory McConville. The co-writers have some experience with dystopias and temporal journeys via their Time Before Time. They are join by artist Lorenzo Re.

In a statement, McConville details how Metal will function: “While continuing to explore Skynet’s machinations throughout history, we’re also taking readers deeper into the Future War era than ever before … Each issue will be a standalone tale that delves into the triumphs and tragedies of those caught in the eternal war with the machines, and the struggle to hold onto their humanity after the world has ended.”

As the series opens, readers will be introduced to engineer Percy Dalton, who sets out on a mission in the wastes of the future accompanied by his “not so trusty” companion “Tex,” a re-configured Terminator. But when they are caught in the No Man’s Land of the war, Tex becomes a “philosophical crux” as Percy struggles to finish the job, work with other humans caught in the conflict, and avoid Tex getting rebooted to his factory settings.

“Working on The Terminator has been one of the most challenging and satisfying projects of my career,” Shalvey added. “Given the prospect of a new series, the opportunity for more ideas and different stories was too exciting to turn down. This time however, I knew I needed a trusted writer who could provide big concepts with emotional range on board with me in order to help me meet this new challenge. Thankfully, Rory McConville, my co-writer from our previous time-travelling series, was available to help me workshop this new playing field … The locations may be different, but the stark, emotive and desolate storytelling remains the same.”

Supporting the series will be covers from Shalvey, Sebastian Piriz, Ivan Tao, and Bob Layton.

The Terminator: Metal arrives in shops this October.
