10/10I Was A Fashion School Serial Killer #4 ratchets the gore and bodies up another level with a shocking revelation that sends our anti-hero on a mission to find her friend, Sofie, who goes missing not once but twice in this issue. Although it’s the second time that causes Rennie to take up arms, so to speak, and go all vigilante on the fashion school’s ass. The metaphorical ass in this case being Mrs. Porschia, who holds a dark secret that takes this John Hughes-meets-Tom Savini college drama to that other level I referred to.
And once again, partners-in-crime, writer Doug Wagner and artist Daniel Hillyard give us a psycho-killer we care for. Because she cares for Sofie. And we care for Sofie too, having been the victim of the college’s mean girls and suffering for her art by trying to work her way through college. Hell, many readers may even be able to relate. And after all, on the whole, Rennie has killed some right rotters. And continues to do so in this issue. By the end of this rather bloody book, the body count has grown rather rapidly, but Rennie’s victims were assholes after all. Well, maybe not the last killing. But you’ll have to read the comic to learn who that victim is. It’s all good, gruesome fun as the narrative hurtles its way to a grand finale next issue.
As ever with this series, you’re treated by the wonderfully gory art of Hillyard, and Michelle Madsen on colours with the right splash of red for the right occasion every time. A style of art that is just comical enough to take some of the sting out of this rather horrific story, but not detract too far from the intention. Rennie is another brilliantly informed serial killer to add to the already impressive lineage of killers Wagner an Hillyard have developed over the years, and another thrilling and emotive series that has you rooting for the bad guy. Or gal in this instance.
