SDCC 2025: Dynamite Returns To The RPG Space With ‘ThunderCats’

by Erik Amaya

Soon, fans of tabletop role playing games can venture to Third Earth.

Dynamite Entertainment announced Tuesday that it will be returning to the RPG space with ThunderCats. Currently in development by Canadian-based Lynnvander Studios, which also developed Dynamite ReAnimator RPG, the ThunderCats game will take on the form of a 250-page guidebook with “mechanics, lore, artwork, and design masterfully assembled in a deluxe presentation.” The company says gamers can expect all of their favorite elements of ThunderCats to be included in the finished product.

The game is, of course, based on the legendary 1980s animated series about a group of refugees from the planet Thundera who must make a new home on Third Earth, where their presence becomes a threat to Mumm-Ra, an ancient force allied with the spirits of evil. The ‘Cat’s Sword of Omens and the Eye of Thundera contained within its hilt can end Mumm-Ra’s power. Unfortunately for all involved, the sword can only be wielded by Lion-O, the heir apparent to lead the surviving ‘Cats, but who is mentally a teenager despite developing into a full grown adult while in hypersleep. Since the original series ended, it has been rebooted twice and became the focus a highly-regard Dynamite comic book series in the last few years.

In fact, the ThunderCats RPG stems from the relationship between Dynamite and Warner Bros. Discovery Consumer Products to create comics like ThunderCats utilizing WBD properties. The RPG is the next evolution of that partnership.

Those interested in the continuing development of the game can sign up for updates via the project’s Kickstarter page.
