Fantastic Four Week Bonus: Rating The Other F4 Related DC/Marvel Crossovers

I’m still working my way through the DC/Marvel crossover omnibus, but interestingly enough, there’s only ONE Fantastic Four crossover in this massive volume. However, there’s three crossovers featuring characters associated with the Four. So let’s take a look!

Darkseid vs Galactus: The Hunger

While I think the branding on the 1995 one-shot by John Byrne and Rick Taylor isn’t the best (in 2025 terms, the SEO would have been better with Silver Surfer and the New Gods or Orion as the title characters), this is an excellent story. When the New Gods learn of Galactus, and his insatiable hunger, headed straight for them, the gods of New Genesis hide, but the gods of Apokolips decide to face the threat of Galactus head-on.

This turns the story into unstoppable force meeting immovable object, as Galactus arrives to consume Apokolips and Darkseid using his every weapon to stop him. The centerpiece though is absolutely the brawl between Orion and the Silver Surfer, as these two demigods battle through the fire pits of Apokolips. It’s brutal with great art, and honestly shows why throwing Marvel and DC characters against each other is so fun.

Green Lantern/Silver Surfer: Unholy Alliances

In 1996, Ron Marz had the cosmic corner of the Marvel AND DC Universes tied down as the regular writer of both Green Lantern and Silver Surfer. So it was only natural to throw both together. Marz was joined by the regular GL team of Darryl Banks, Terry Austin, Digital Chameleon and Chris Eliopoulos for this massive adventure. When the Cyborg Superman and Terrax swap universes, Kyle Rayner and Norrin Radd must stop them. But they’re soon to learn that there’s a greater threat as they’re all simply pawns of Parralax and Thanos!

This one-shot is very busy, and a little on the convoluted side. But honestly, that kind of makes it epic. It’s a big, bombastic cosmic epic, with multiverse ending stakes. It’s also a prelude to DC Versus Marvel. It loses a few points in barely having its title characters interact, but it looks amazing. Definitely a lot of fun.

Silver Surfer/Superman

Oh my goodness, what a charming bit of chaos. George Perez, Ron Lim, Terry Austin, Tom Smith, and John Costanza teamed to cross over a duo that you might not expect. Superman and Silver Surfer find themselves swapped places. They quickly both have to save the day, but soon realize they’re being manipulated. Can the duo outsmart the Impossible Man and Mr. Mxyzptlk before their game endangers both universes?

So this isn’t perfect- the dialogue is a bit clunky and the titular heroes only team up for about three pages- but it’s very fun. The Surfer has to deal with the chaos of an average Tuesday in Metropolis, while Superman faces an illusion of Krypton while facing the Super-Skrull. It’s a breezy, light read, but Perez captures the antagonists’ voices so well that it elevates it quite a bit. Lim is at his 90’s height, and I love how the book looks for that reason. At first, I thought I would rate this a bit lower, but overall, I really had a LOT of fun here.
