‘007: First Light’ Comes Out Early Next Year … And Looks Like It’s Two Years Off

IO Interactive and PlayStation recently revealed a lengthy first gameplay trailer of IO Interactive’s upcoming 007: First Light. Set in the James Bond universe, the title follows a young Bond as he’s just starting to build up his legend by tracking down another spy operative: 009.

The 36-minute trailer features a glimpse at some of the cool cars players will get to drive, some epic action sequences, and even illustrates the variety of ways players can take on a mission. Certainly, it absolutely looks like James Bond … but it also looks like it needs a bit more time in the oven.

I’d certainly love to be wrong, but the framerate issues make me think this game is going to be a strain on any PC set-up that isn’t near the top of the line. As cool as it is to control an airship in mid-air while fighting nondescript goons, it’s going to be a lot less cool if the framerate begins to chug. That’s without getting to the deep dive’s aimless driving sequence that seemed to literally go on forever. Potentially, this will feel a lot better when players have the game in their hands, but it definitely didn’t showcase very well.

That said, if anyone can make this game work it’s absolutely IO Interactive. The most recent Hitman trilogy has been one of the most beloved franchises in gaming, and the second half of this trailer actually looked special, as it really did feel like players were free to solve any given situation in a ton of different ways. Should First Light determine how to make the overall experience feel like the sneaking sections and the gun sections we saw here, this has the potential to go down as a classic. I’d just have a lot more faith in the project if I knew it was a 2027 game.

That said, they’re certainly going out with their special edition. Entitled the “Legacy Edition”, this version’s going to run fans $299.99 and includes the base game, the Deluxe DLC pack, the Gleaming Gadget Pack, a Golden Gun figurine, and a steel case. This feels like a must-buy for any hardcore James Bond fan, at least if they can stomach the steep barrier to entry.

007: First Light launches March 27th, 2026 for Steam, the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and Nintendo Switch 2.
