Streaming And Screaming: 1997’s ‘The Odyssey’

Christopher Nolan‘s highly anticipated adaptation of The Odyssey is slated to arrive next year. The director’s influence loomed large on my adolescence with The Dark Night trilogy and Inception. However, his more recent films have lacked a level of “pop-cultural appeal” to illicit my enthusiasm. We’ve spent 20 years in the the shadow of Nolan’s adherence to “gritty realism.” It remains to be seen how he will adapt a story known for fabulous gods and monsters to his signature style.
This is why I bring up the two-part TV adaptation of The Odyssey from 1997. The miniseries does a good job covering the highlights of the epic poem for a modern audience. The special effects do look fake, but it has a charm similar to the Ray Harryhausen films inspired by mythology. So, if you’re looking for gods, monsters, and a good time you should watch the 1997 version of The Odyssey.
