Just The Specials: Burger King’s Limited Edition Monster Menu

Just The Specials is where I try limited releases, holiday offerings, and special meal items from across the food world and then report back on what I have found. Today, I had the opportunity to tuck in to Burger King’s first-ever Monster Menu.

Out the gate they have a Halloween-themed Burger King crown that fits my adult sized head. This fact alone makes me so delighted that my mood on the meal was sky high at the start of things.

First up was the Jack-O-Lantern Whopper. Burger King says this is “The iconic flame-grilled Whopper, stacked with American cheese, bacon, tomatoes, lettuce, onions, pickles, ketchup, and mayo, on a striking Jack O’ Lantern orange bun topped with black sesame seeds that gets its festive hue from natural spice.”

The bun had no strange flavor for being alarmingly orange. The Whopper itself was pretty tasty. I’m a mustard and catsup kind of guy if I am doing a fast-food burger, so the mayo was already a variation from my norm. It was a lot of mayo and something about Burger Kings mayo always tastes a little unique. Not in a bad way, but even on the chicken sandwich there is a tang to it that is uniquely a Burger King flavor.

All in all, though, this was a really solid fast-food burger. I would probably eat it again if I was really hungry and intended to be overly full.

Next up were the Vampire Nuggets. Burger King says that they are “Crispy chicken nuggets shaped like vampire fangs and bats served in a carton designed as a coffin, perfect for dipping and sharing with your coven. These fang-tastic treats are available as part of the King Jr. Meal or a la carte.”

The Vampire Nuggets need to be offered year-round. Full stop. That is something you need to understand before we go any further. I am 100% behind these as a regular menu item and will be doing everything in my power to try and make this happen.

The bat shaped nuggets were solid. Great coating, the pressed chicken inside was warm, flavorful, everything you want from a fast-food nugget.

The rock star of the show was the vampire fang shaped nuggets though. There is something about the shape of these that gives this more surface area, and the coating is just thin enough that the combo is seriously, unironically, and in no part due to my fun crown, absolutely stellar. These were so tasty that I was flabbergasted by how good they were. This was my thought without any sauce.

I can’t recall the last time I had fast-food nuggets without any kind of sauce, but I was so confounded by how good these things tasted I actually ate all of the vampire fanged shaped ones (that I did not share with my wife to make sure I was not having some kind of weird delusions or something) without any sauce.

Vampire nuggets, 10/10 all day.

Next up were the Mummy Mozzarella Fries. Burger King says they are “Crispy mozzarella sticks “wrapped” in golden breading, paired with a marinara dipping sauce and served in a special limited-edition mummy-themed box.”

Honestly, they are about as middle of the road as you can get with a Mozzarella Stick. They have a crumbly coating, the cheese is fine, they are not bad by any stretch and the dipping sauce is marinara flavored but comes off a bit like what I remember pizza Lunchables sauce tasting like. It’s fine, not bad, not great, just kind of an offering they have with a really cute mummy themed box.

Finally, there is the Franken-Candy Sundae. Burger King says it is a “Creamy vanilla soft serve topped with a franken-mix of Oreo cookie crumbles, purple franken-candy syrup, and purple and green popping candy, stitching together one electrifyingly sweet dessert.”

I was blown away by how colorful this thing actually is. Normally, based on past experience with other fast-food places and their Halloween offerings, the images of what they have and the actual food you get look very different. This thing is bright and colorful and vibes like a really good old school Sunday from somewhere long lost to the modern fast casual menu space. This thing hit with nostalgia in a way I can’t quite put into words, but it was not unpleasant in any way. I only had a little bit of it because this meal was indeed fit for a “monster” of considerable size. By the time I got to the sundae, the burger was weighing heavy.

All in all, this is a stellar offering with great packaging and tons of solid store support. Burger King has outdone themselves with this Halloween meal and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to try something festive that does not cost a ton and gives you a quick easy meal that may make you smile.
